It's better than the original cut, but that's not saying much. The problem with this cut of the film, is that it takes too much on its shoulders, destroying a careful balance needed for a film like this.

The only thing that really detracts from this great film is the shitty special effects. Obviously, the studio didn't care too much about this movie, but you can tell that Paul Shrader and his cast did. They brought the stark realism and pstchological terror of the original Exorcist back to the table. It's just too bad the studio decided it wasn't scary enough for a worldwide release.

This is a fun, taut thriller that provides a worthy prelude to the Exorcist franchise. Not really a horror movie, this instead goes more into the psychology of the exorcists, victims, and the demon itself. Although it is obvious that the film lacks the polish of a proper theatrical release, the cast and writing are far superior to the other prequel that was released.

One of the two prequels to the Exorcist. This was the one they shelved and then had Renny Harlin take a shot at making the movie over. Bad points: the cgi in this movie is awful and they could have done without some scenes. Good points: it's a pretty good horror flick. Not as good as the original Exorcist and if you're comparing it to that movie, then take a star off this rating. If you're comparing this movie to most of the horror movies coming out of the Hollywood system then this one is better then most of them.
