Disgrace (2008)

Disgrace is the story of a South African professor of English who loses everything: his reputation, his job, his peace of mind, his good looks, his dreams of artistic success, and finally even his ability to protect his cherished daughter. After having an affair with a student, he moves to the Eastern Cape, where he gets caught up in a mess of post-apartheid politics.

Am I in a parallel universe? I cannot agree with the praise being heaped on this film on the basis that it's a fine and literary, allegorical piece of cinema. Claptrap! The "morality" represented in the daughter's "quiet acceptance" of her brutal rape - and the idea that her acceptance is a noble metaphor for reconciliation is utterly dysfunctonal. Rape is rape and complicity for it is plain wrong. John Malkovich is very very good - but very very cold. The idea that his character's crime, an abuse of power in sleeping with a student, should be equated with a brutal rape, robbery and assault is to me bizarre. Most of the performances in this film are excellent, but highly dislikeable and to me, this story is deeply flawed and plain cruel. I cannot believe the "resolution" would be acceptable to most South Africans with a sense of wrong and right. Instead, it's 'acceptable' only as intellectual fodder for people bored with classic storytelling. Strangely compelling but ultimately unsatisfying and disturbing.

Brilliantly acted but disturbing and depressing movie about sad things, slowly coasting downhill to an even more disturbing and depressing ending. Jesus. The only happy faces in this file were the ones on the dogs, and the dogs all get killed. I won't sleep well tonight.

Love John Malkovich's acting as well as Jessica Haines' and Eriq Ebouaney's. Beautiful scenery, deep social issues. Pride, arrogance and the abuse of power followed by sorrow and in the end perhaps a solution? What do you think was on John's mind when he sat in his ride thinking then parked it on a hill and took the long walk to his daughter's house on foot. Remember, he had been working with dogs, "getting fleas" as he lay down wallowing in the floor. Did he come to a conclusion that he may not be able to turn back anyone's clock but he could certainly stop one or two because he had been making that decision for a while in the dog clinic. "I'm just saying...."

Brilliant movie - you forget you are watching John Malkovich (rare for me to experience in his movies) he embodies the character to perfection. Tackles some full on issues but doesn't feel draining to watch.

A very confronting film, difficult to watch - but watch it.
