Detropia (2012)

Detroit's story has encapsulated the iconic narrative of America over the last century – the Great Migration of African Americans escaping Jim Crow; the rise of manufacturing and the middle class; the love affair with automobiles; the flowering of the American dream; and now… the collapse of the economy and the fading American mythos.

A valiant effort documenting the collapse of an american city, but poorly executed. There is little here that isn't done as well or better not to mention more concisely by, "Roger and Me" by michael moore over a decade ago. Most of this is now old news & we overstand what has happened & continues to happen in cities across this country. The narrative interviews are strangely restricted to only TWO people, primarily, and even the faint glimmer of hope in the closing scenes is not enough to salvage the city, or this documentary. Look elsewhere.

The whole experience is one long rant in radiant colors.

Absolute must-see documentary. There are moments that will make your jaw drop as you see the state that this once-great city has been reduced to. There are moments that you will laugh at the film's quirky subjects and the way they deal with their situation. It's powerful, moving, and gives us a taste of the direction we could be heading in as a nation, as well as hope for the future.

This movie is phenomenal. I was one of the lucky few to see the world premiere at Sundance this past January and it is a gripping, beautiful portrait of a town I hold near and dear to my heart. The cinematography is gorgeous and editing amazing. Do not miss this treatise on America and where we are now as our manufacturing base and ability to make things slowly falls away.

Viewers learn nothing about the demise of Detroit. This doc focuses on a few individuals with very little credibility expressing their opinions. Lots of whining.
