Witty but not campy, grand without being unduly somber, it is a crazy, almost-coherent riot of intrigue, color and kineticism anchored by the charisma of its cast.

Amazing adventure...mix a bit of intrigue of House of Flying Daggers, eternal rebellion and loyalty to monarchy of Hero and yes loads of Sherlock Holmes of Guy Ritchie and spice it with politics and love,,,you got the mix...battles and politics may not even touch Red Cliff but is definitely enjoyable. You know that you are watching one from the stable of the guy who made Once Upon a Time in China series...but I so missed Jet Li!

I'm really not much of a fan of these Chinese Fantasy movies, but this one was really enjoyable, even at 2+ hours. It is a combination of martial arts, magic, and murder mystery. The special effects and CGI were all pretty seamless but not over done (except for maybe the finale). I'm not at all familiar with Chinese actors, but everyone in this one were really convincing. This probably isn't a movie for everyone, but I enjoyed it and so did the other Slightly Strange People Who Go To The Sunday Morning Showing.

As a disclaimer, I watched a version of the film without subtitles and followed along with the plot synopsis online. With that said, the visuals in this film were enough to carry it sans dialogue. The whole movie is a gorgeous tapestry of style and panache.
