Deli Man (2015)

Every story needs a brave and trustworthy guide, and Deli Man's is the effusive and charming Ziggy Gruber, a third-generation delicatessen man - his uncle and great-uncle owned Berger's in the diamond district, and the Woodrow Deli on Long Island. His grandfather owned the famous Rialto Delicatessen on Broadway, and Ziggy was stuffing cabbages atop of a crate when he was eight. Now he is owner and maven (as well as a Yiddish-speaking French trained chef) of one of the country's top delis, Kenny and Ziggy's in Houston – yes, Texas…Shalom y'all. Of course the story of deli isn't Ziggy's alone. Deli Man has visited meccas like the Carnegie, Katz's, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate 'n Al, and Canter's, as well as interviewed some of the great connoisseurs of deli, including Jerry Stiller, Alan Dershowitz, Freddie Klein, Dennis Howard, Jay Parker (Ben's Best), Fyvush Finkel, and Larry King.

There should be a word for the friendly rudeness of deli waiters: In the documentary Deli Man, they’re described as being as brusque and familiar with you as if you’re there three times a day — even if they’ve never seen you before.

The history and heartbeat of delicatessens is a strange subject for a documentary, but "Deli Man" turns out to be a charismatic and informative journey into Jewish and foodie culture.

Amazingly appetizing and enthralling from appetizer to dessert, this doc is much more than a profile of Ziggy Gruber, the primary deli man. The well-paced and written film chronicles the nearly 150 years of Jewish delicatessens in America and more recently Canada! Only 150 Jewish delis remain in North America, and this marvelous film cherishes each one with coast to coast energetic interviews - celebs like Larry King and Fyvush Finkel, devoted talented chefs and managers. Luscious corned beef and pastrami abound, along with pickles, noodle kugel, matzo ball soup, chopped liver, and mouth-watering smoked nova salmon. Bissels of Yiddish are sprinkled in and translated on screen accompanying an engaging close personal look at Ziggy's Houston deli enterprise and his courtship culminated in a wonderfully sentimental wedding in Budapest. This is definitely one of the most charming and engaging food-related docs in a long while.

For the most part, good food and good cheer are the order of the day here, and the chatty, old-school Ziggy serves as a reliable — and touching — tour guide.

Roger Moore 24 Feb 2015

It’s a playful and tasty crash course in deli history, deli dining and deli language, a world of smoked meats, cured meats and fresh fish. Vegetarians are excused.
