Defending Your Life (1991)

Is there love after death? After he dies suddenly, the hapless advertising executive Daniel Miller finds himself in Judgment City, a gleaming way station where the newly deceased must prove they lived a life of sufficient courage to advance in their journey through the universe. While this movie takes place mostly in the afterlife, the central themes are love, taking chances, not letting fear run your life, and going after what you really want. It's an Albert Brooks movie, so the comedy is subtle and subdued, but charming. This is a true classic.

Funny, witty, and I still think about "if I want to defend THIS day" when I am doing things in my day-to-day life. Great movie!

my favorite comedy, a wonderful film, a little-seen movie that features the hilarious Albert Brooks and the legendary Meryl Streep in one of the most interesting comedic film premises to come out of a studio system. really entertaining, wonderful ending, I really hope the afterlife is just like this!!

This is one of the funniest and wisest movies I have ever seen. Albert Brooks plays an "every man" whose visit to the "way station" of the after life is much like the life he left. He doesn't rate the jacuzzi and the chocolates on the pillow. In his previous life, he was an advertising man who was taken advantage of by everyone. In the life before that, he was dinner. But he falls in love with a practically perfect woman, a woman he may lose if he doesn't learn to take risks. The movie is incredibly funny, with its view of Judgment city, where the weather is 70 degrees and perfect, and you eat all you want and never gain weight. But the movie also has profound things to say about living fearlessly. Albert Brooks' best.

It never ceases to amaze me how FEW people actually even know this one exists. I have watched it multiple times and always laugh. It is also a light, cute romantic comedy with a fantastic cast. This is one of my favourite movies.
