What could have been easily a maudlin soap opera is rescued with strong dialogue from regular Hallmark Hall of Fame screenwriter Robert Lenski.

This movie takes an interesting look at a little-heralded event in WW II, in which German agents tried to paralyze American counterattacks to the 'Battle of the Bulge.' By having an old black man refuse the United States highest decoration for battlefield valor, the Medal of Honor, we are drawn in to a compelling puzzle that probes race relations, the insanity of war, and what really makes one a hero. Look for a great portrayal by James Garner, himself a wounded combat veteran.
