Roméo and Juliette are two young actors. They fall in love at first sight, move in together and make a baby. A love story and the founding of a home like millions of others. Except that their little boy, Adam, behaves abnormally. Excellent, plein d'energie, de mouvement, de force... un film sobre, efficace, un couple exemplaire devant l'adversitÃ (C), limite trop parfait !

For all its narrative flourishes, what makes "Declaration" feel special is the intimacy and honesty of its depiction of good people leaning on each other as they try to hold it together.

Declaration of War was, to me, the opposite of Lorenzo's Oil. Not that they weren't equally good movies in their own way, but whereas that movie devoted a lot of its running time to showing a child suffering in agonizing, disturbing detail that served to lessen its emotional impact and increase its horror, Declaration of War leaves the suffering mostly to the imagination. This is a movie about Romeo and Juliette first and foremost, and how their son's cancer changes them from carefree young adults to some of the bravest parents I have ever seen in medical dramas. This is a light, often funny movie, but don't let that fool you into thinking it has no emotional impact. It does, in showing small details and raw, honest emotion.

Declaration of War is a domestic comedy as much as it is a medical drama. This movie has been made by the couple it is about, Valerie Donzelli and Jeremie Elkaim. She directed, they wrote it together, and in real life, their relationship also fell apart. They approach their fraught story with a surprising freshness.
