Declaration of War (2011)

Roméo and Juliette are two young actors. They fall in love at first sight, move in together and make a baby. A love story and the founding of a home like millions of others. Except that their little boy, Adam, behaves abnormally. The young parents try hard to persuade themselves that everything is okay but, with the passing of time, they cannot delude themselves anymore: their son has a problem. From now on, war is declared. A war against illness. A war against Death. A war against despair.

Valérie Donzelli's Declaration of War deals with issues that may scare audiences away. Don't let it.

Instead of venturing into mournful "Terms of Endearment" territory, the film - and the filmmakers - commit to a relentless determination to live.

Alison Willmore 26 Jan 2012

Sprinting through hospital rooms, parties, sterile corridors, and grayish courtyards, Declaration Of War salutes its characters' capacity to step up and meet life's harshest unexpected demands.

Jeremie Elkaim and Valerie Donzelli had already achieved an incredible accomplishment even before the film began: Almost entirely on their own, they both dually directed, wrote, acted in, wrote the music for, and even provided make-up work for this film. A modern "hipster" version of the traditional "Child with terminal illness; whole family helps" weeper drama, Declaration of War is almost entirely the product of these two auteur's efforts. While as said before, the film is already quite an accomplishment, it could be considered to be an even greater success because of the quality of their creation. It's an effective French drama replete excellent performances from its cast, beautiful cinematography (the final scene on a beach is particularly memorable), and both a cool alternative soundtrack and Amelie styled narration which successfully brings the film out of the occasional draggy patch. This is, for the most part, just an overall excellent movie. Grade: B+

Vale a pena conferir!
