In the Summer of 1965 a young man is filled with the life of the idyllic old pearling port Broome - fishing, hanging out with his mates and his girl. However his mother returns him to the religious mission for further schooling. After being punished for an act of youthful rebellion, he runs away from the mission on a journey that ultimately leads him back home.

On stage, energetic performances can overcome slight characterisation and shallow plotting but onscreen, the wafer-thin characters and lack of plot thrust are exposed.

Amusing movie for adults, quite uncomfortable to watch with children even if it is rated PG. There is swearing and lots of sexual references. It is set in the summer of 69 not 65 as quoted here not that that makes any difference though.

I watched this on the basis of someone else's recommendation. It was lighthearted compared to other films about indigenous Australians, like Samson and Delilah.
