Deacon Brodie (1997)

Drama based on the true story of Deacon Brodie one of Scotland's most notorious criminals. In 1788 Deacon Brodie a master cabinet maker and town councillor is a rogue and a hedonist. He steals money but gives it back. He attempts to steal a fortune from the city's Customs and Excise office but the attempt fails and he is caught. There is a widely-publicised trial and he is sentenced to death to be hanged on the gallows he designed.

Historical Drama!? Save yourself a lot of time and money, if you are thinking of buying this on DVD. I got it on an old VHS tape and watched it to the end. Whoever was the researcher for this BBC film should be hung. It is full of flaws from beginning to end. The cast tries to make the script work but having Billy Connolly as the central man doesn't help this dross. If you want to find out about the man called Deacon Brodie then my advice is buy a book. The one star is for the Cover for the tape.
