Cry Freedom (1981)
Balogun's most political film is a confrontation with the African wars of liberation. Based on Carcase for Hounds, Meja Mwangi's novel about the Mau-Mau uprising, it is set in an unnamed country and thus offers the vision of a pan-African struggle for freedom and against colonial oppression. The central figures in the straightforwardly and powerfully told story are the guerrilla leader Haraka and his adversary, the English colonial official Kingsley. In the end, the film becomes a homage to the freedom fighters from all over Africa: the final images show Patrice Lumumba, Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela and Amílcar Cabral, among others.

The portrayal of the aparthied and racism that they white man showed to the blacks seems very real, but the story, of a man's ideas to make South Africa a country for all, is the definition of man's hope to be equals. Denzel played Steve Biko with such passion that it seemed Biko was back to spread his word again. Kevin Kline was brilliant with Donald Woods, only weeks after shooting A Fish Called Wanda. A brilliant film and one that needs to be seen to understand how fragile the human mind is and how something so trivial as words can scare, divide and destroy a country

Although Attenborough's direction is unimaginitive, the story of they way Donald Woods was transformed by his relationship with Steve Biko, one of the less internationally well-known heroes of the fight against apartheid, is one of the most profound ever told. Everyone should hear the remarkable words which Woods managed to smuggle out of the country and which were given life for film by John Briley. Denzel Washington's portrayal is of a confident, intelligent man who "does what he likes".

SUPERBE !!!!!!!!!

Awesome. Have read this book 6 times and watched the movie twice. Just amazing, this movie should be watched by all generations and it's sad that Steve Biko was not given prominance as Nelson Mandela. Truly amazing.
