This was a very solid Film Noir that I'm happy to have finally crossed off the list. In this film anti-Semitism stands in for the homophobia represented in the source material, as a murder victim is Jewish rather than gay, and we spend the film working backwards trying to figure out which of the trio of recently returned servicemen is guilty of killing the man. Good stuff.

It's not quite noir but Robert Ryan as an anti-semetic psycho is worth the viewing

Often engaging film noir finds three Roberts (Ryan, Mitchum, and Young) embroiled in a murder mystery. A group of soldiers come into town and one ends up dead. A police officer (Mitchum) involved in the case tries to clear one of the soldiers, to whom is a friend of his, by retrieving a witness (Gloria Grahame), who is a sultry prostitute. Meanwhile, the investigator (Young) is concerned that one of the soldiers (Ryan) is behind the murder due to his strange behaviour. Not as good as other film noirs, but still intriguing enough for a watch. Grahame and Ryan have the best performances of the cast. It is a shame, though, this good, not great, film noir was one of the few nominated for Best Picture, while other great ones from the 1940's, such as "The Third Man," "Notorious," "The Big Sleep," and "Shadow of Doubt" to name a few, were not.

Often movies with messages and grand soliloquies or pronouncements don't work because they seem overly theatrical or contrived. But sometimes they do work, and and the artistic effort gets translated - through the famous "willing suspension of disbelief" by we the viewers - into great entertainment with a message; think Frank Capra. That's what we've got here with Crossfire, except the message is delivered through a film noir crime drama. With three great performances by Young, Mitchum and Ryan, a clever story, great lighting and scene set-up, Dmytryk has delivered a engrossing story and a great, timeless message. The one real weakness of this film, poor transitions between scenes, is a minor flaw in an otherwise fine film.

Superbly directed by Edward Dmytryk. He won the Oscar for best director on his achievement in this film. understandably the film also won for best picture. It is a powerful film-noir tale about murder and hate, but also it has a wrong man scenario. As for Mitchum, his talents weren't put to good use in this film. But at this time he wasn't a major star either. Great film for Noir fans. One other thing, this film is not from 1989!! 1947 is the correct year.
