An absolute must watch movie!!! The thought process in the timelines to tell this story are seamless, playful and beautiful. The cinematography is equally impressive, yet not so intrusive as to make you aware of its presence. This movie deals with loss, pain and change ( to name a few themes ) shown through the eyes of a young girl - yet the story can be equally viewed from her relationship with the adults in her life during a turbulent ( for the filmmakers as well ). I have to watch this again.

Dark and witty. This was a great movie. The only thing I would have done differently was shave off a few shots at the end.

El Espíritu de la Colmena (1973) has a lost cousin called Cría Cuervos, and just like a child loses naive innocence and a fantasy perspective of the world as it grows up, Death is more menacing in an omniscient role that lurks around the darkest corners of the mind. Viskningar och Rop (1972) meets Víctor Erice, you could say. Terrific depiction of the fascination with death and about metaphysical questionings. Ana Torrent will always be my Spanish little princess. 98/100

Much of the Spanish Civil War allegory is lost on me. What's left is a strong performance from Torrent, a haunting song and a few strong scenes. It doesn't operate on the same level (poetically or emotionally) as Spirit of the Beehive, but I'm not sorry that I watched it.

It looks wonderful and the kid is lovely, but I just wasn't interested.
