love it! melanie griffith was born to play this role. the absurdity of her plan to become a star against the backdrop of troubled race relations makes for a compelling story. all of the story's elements come together in fascinating unison to sing the praises of freedom. it really is a wonderful film with great characters. the plot and tone is similar to "nurse betty," but better and more southern.

This is technically a "coming-of-age" film, but it has a kookiness to it that's irresistible. It deals with 60's racism without being heavy-handed - while also being a road-trip movie. It's completely odd and completely unique. Antonio Banderas should consider directing more often.
