Countdown to Zero (2010)

Although the Cold War is behind us, the threat of nuclear disaster remains very real. Director Lucy Walker discusses the invention of the atomic bomb and brings the story into the present day, examining the possibility of nuclear calamity under the categories of "Madness," "Accident" and "Miscalculation." With narration by Gary Oldman, the film includes a hypothetical sequence of a nuclear explosion in New York City's Times Square, timed to coincide with the New Year's Eve countdown.

A real threat to human existence is posed by this convincing documentary. The producers want to mobilize public opinion through a campaign to permanently denuclearize the globe.

I attended a press screening of this tonight, followed by a Q&A with the executive producers. It's a campaigning documentary on behalf of the Global Zero campaign, which wants nuclear weapons abolished. Listening to how close we've come to an accidental WW3 (in 1995 particularly), I can see why. Worrying stuff.

this is really scary -- explains how we have every chance of being obliterated accidentally by a nuclear bomb as we do by terrorists and rogue states. also, explains exactly what happens to human beings and buildings and communities and countries when a nuclear bomb hits, and it is definitely not at all pretty
