It’s a less pointed and implicitly feminist work than such classics as "Raise The Red Lantern" and "The Story Of Qiu Ju" —one could even call it a shameless weepie. Still, it’s a welcome throwback to one of the most emotionally wrenching actor-director partnerships in film history.

A touching, bittersweet love story set amidst and after the turmoil of China's Cultural Revolution. With superb performances by Li Gong and Chen Daoming, this heartrending drama moves viewers with its probing examinations of regret, redemption and reinvention and surprises with its candor about a disruptive, painful period in the nation's history. A nearly perfect film in every regard.
