Gui Lai est un film particulièrement fort émotionnellement dans la mesure où il traite de la Révolution Culturelle Chinoise par un angle très intéressant et assez original : un homme enfermé 20 ans rentre chez lui dans une maison où sa femme ne le reconnait plus et le chasse. Il n'a alors de cesse de la reconquérir. Le film est magnifiquement bien mis en scène avec des séquences dantesques, une douceur tragique et un trio d'acteurs absolument fabuleux composé de Gong Li, Chen Daoming et Zhang Huiwen. Si le film démarre un peu lentement, il enchaîne les scènes symboliques, fortes et parfois désespérantes. Même s'il est clair que le happy end étant absolument impossible, on finit quand même crucifié par un film qui aurait fait pleurer Spielberg une heure.
