...a human-size epic, a modest story of ordinary people coping as they can with enormous pain. There's a gentleness to the production that belies the savage, mindless infliction of history on individual lives.

"Coming Home" is a bittersweet tale told with deft skill by Zhang Yimou and his cast and crew. The film deals with real issues as well as a critical historical look at his native land.

Fionnuala Halligan 30 Sep 2015

Zhang Yimou is now 64 years old, and the personal pain that permeated his last film to deal directly with the Cultural Revolution, To Live, has faded to a sad resignation and a mood of tender forgiveness in the emotional Coming Home.

Jared Mobarak 27 Feb 2016

[Yimou's] latest is an effective drama consisting of devastating performances.

Robert Levin 15 Oct 2015

A bold and beautiful work of cinema that externalizes deeply-felt emotions onto a canvas defined by the filmmaker's mastery of the melodrama.
