Claudine is a single mother in New York City who endures an exhausting commute to the suburbs where she works as a maid for wealthy families. In one carefully tended white community, she meets Roop, a charismatic but irresponsible garbage collector. Romance quickly ensues, but Claudine doubts that their relationship is good for her six children, and Rupert, despite his good nature, is reluctant to take on fatherhood.

We all wanted no parts of Mr.Welfare. This was a wonderful movie an outstandin cast. James Earl Jones, Diahann Carrol Bravo. Nothing can break the bonds of a family. I love it ..an TO BE INVISIBLE ..is my favorite song from it. Listen to the words. The sad thing with all black movies , the Academy still see's past them.

It's not suppose to be deep and define all that black people are, were, blah blah. Its a LOVE STORY!!! and I loved it since i was little.

The visit from welfare and their visit to welfare are both priceless. And, the final scene is touching too.

Well-intentioned but not very compelling as drama or romantic comedy, Claudine bears the distinction of being one of few 1970s films to offer a black femme a lead role, a single mom of six on welfare for which Diahann Carroll received an Oscar nomination.

One of the few movies in this time period that wasn't classed as a 'blaxplotation film'. Very endearing. Getting the DVD and listening to the commentary of the actors of this film was really eye-opening.
