In 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army has just captured Nanjing, then-capital of the Republic of China. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a six week period wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

You haven't heard of it? That's a good sign. Sometimes great art takes a long time to be appreciated. This is a stunning, harrowing, cinema verite look at the 1937 Japanese invasion of Beijing's capital city, Nanking. Historians estimate as many as 20,000 Chinese women in Nanking were periodically raped by the occupying Japanese army, with a staggering 300,000 Chinese civilians executed. Shot in black-and-white and filmed over a period of 4 years, this is a stunning achievement by any standard in cinema and as disturbing as COME AND SEE and SCHINDLER'S LIST. Highly recommended...

This movie was so sad... I can not begin to tell how sad it was... how much sorrow... how horrible the situation was for them, the cruelties they had to suffer, but alltogether the movie is brilliantly made, the characters reach such development that you want them at all cost to survive... it's a really and wonderfull movie

The least brutal Nanjing massacre movie I've ever seen, but it is the most unsettling and disturbing, as well as the best one among those films with the same subject. I really can't say i "like" this movie, and it isn't enjoyable neither. It's very very depressing. One of the best movie in 2009.

Chuan Lu's merciless and simultaneously deeply humane dissection of the Rape of Nanking features up there with the very best of wartime drama. Must-see.
