In 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army has just captured Nanjing, then-capital of the Republic of China. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a six week period wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

Chaun Lu is a genius and let me state briefly the reasons in a single paragraph. This celluloid contribution is clearly influenced from the way to present a brutal historical background, to the way of dramatizing it and the technical tools to create a bigger scope of atrocities and catastrophe. Yet, he embraces these influences without hesitating and the final message becomes clear and honest. That's what counts in modern cinema. What we have in hands now is the best movie of 2009, a piece that implicates very directly that the enemy to destroy is war itself as a means of empowerment, a triumphant juggernaut for Chinese cinema (which always has defied sociopolitical standards and faced national censorship, by the way, and for that, I raise my glass). 97/100

One might raise the hand and question the authenticity of the director's responsibility for executing a precise account of horrifying events,or the sympathy he showed towards Hideo Nakaizumi's role of the Japanese private or maybe giving Gao Yuanyuan her most mature performance to date.Maybe nothing will happen at all and the film will exhume under the roaring blockbusters.Whatever the result will be,Lu Chuan's crescendo is here to stay. Jancso's The Red and the White in pre-WWII Nanking.

I'm a high school Mandarin Chinese teacher. I also enjoy grilling. I can't recommend this film to the faint of heart, or to anyone who just wants to think all the atrocities of WW2 happened only in Europe. This movie is graphically violent, epic in detail and unfortunately, historically accurate. Nanjing, Nanjing is superb.
