City of Gold (2016)

As the unabashed cradle of Hollywood superficiality and smoggy urban sprawl, Los Angeles has long been condemned as a cultural wasteland. In the richly penetrating documentary odyssey City of Gold, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold shows us another Los Angeles, where ethnic cooking is a kaleidoscopic portal to the mysteries of an unwieldy city and the soul of America.

It's a documentary that is ostensibly a profile of a man, but is really about the vibrant city he inhabits, beyond the Hollywood sheen and the grit of Compton.

The film is most interesting when it uses Gold to tell the story of Los Angeles’s diversity, rather than the story of the most important stomach in Los Angeles.

It's a tasty primer on the man, the eater, the critic and the city.

Looking for a feel-good documentary? City of Gold features Los Angeles journalist Jonathan Gold who has made a career out of reviewing meals at the city's myriad small eateries. And given that L.A. is home to such a wide variety of nationalities, his choice of where to eat is endless. Recipient of the first Pulitzer prize for food writing, he says he's one of those lucky people with a dream job. After a positive Gold review, the fortunes of a modest establishment skyrockets overnight. And in spite of trying to stay anonymous, his presence is sometimes exposed, triggering mild panic in the kitchen. As the story unfolds, we see Gold's mission has become more than food critic. He's singing the praises of his hometown's unique cultural mosaic. Gold's neighborhood Los Angeles is refreshingly different from the glitz we're usually shown on screen and in the tabloids.

This doc is like a loving commentary on the value of immigrants, who have made Los Angeles not just the city of movies but of food as well.
