Chop Suey (1930)

It seems to be mostly a stereotypical depiction of the Chinese-here portrayed as rats-and the way they run their laundry.

Weber's talent as a photographer is undisputed, so "Chop Suey" is a bit of a disappointment. The film, which is positioned as an autobiography, tells us very little about Weber as a person and instead becomes more of a biography of Frances Faye, a popular pianist whose active career spanned the 1940s through the 1970s. The result: meh. Without context or a recognizable arc, "Chop Suey" plays like a video collage of Weber's inspirations without revealing much about the man behind the camera.

...an alternately beautiful and annoying scrapbook of a film. And just as its title suggests, it's a mixed bag.

Joe Mader 10 May 2001

A film of extraordinary beauty and singular vision.

Beautiful photography. Too bad the film is like a custom car up on blocks - nice to look at but it doesn't go anywhere.

It's hard to resist, no matter how much you may hate fashion photography, and this documentary is less a love letter to Weber than to the people who've inspired him.
