Cargo 200 (2007)

While returning to Leningrad from a visit to his brother, Professor Artyom's car breaks down and he finds assistance at an isolated farmhouse occupied by Alexey, his wife, a Vietnamese laborer, and a stranger who wanders around the farm. When his car is repaired, Artyom leaves, drunk on moonshine, and students Valera and Angelika arrive. After Valera gets drunk, the stranger abducts Angelika.

Wow. Don't know how to describe this one. Depressing, bleak, disturbing Russian film. Reminded me of the Gaspar Noe of Russia. Not a happy movie in any way. In fact I think it was pretty awful the more I think about it. Well done though. Artsy.

Unflinching would be a gentle word to describe this portrayal of a doomed humanity, but the exact point of the film beyond its doomsday message is never really clear.

This is an unbelievable story of human cruelty based on a true story. It makes so much sense that the sick guy in the film is a military man, a man of power. It's not only the communist Russia that power was given to people that should be in jail or in a mental clinic.

Balabanov is on my list of 'must-see' directors, so my expectations were high with this one. Dark and brutal, Cargo 200 offers us a bleak portrayal of the Communist Russia in 1984. As usual with Balabanov, a good deal of knowledge of Russian society is required before sitting this film, but once you penetrate its sensibility, Cargo 200 has a lot to say even outside its historical context. A truly terrifying and original film of political power gone berserk. Another gem from Aleksey Balabanov.
