Babenco came back after a 7 year break to give us this masterpiece. Pixote, Kiss of the Spider Woman... who on this earth can direct a better prison movie, I ask?

I liked how the movie developed its characters, immersed us in the life of the prison.... all before the massacre. I feel it drove home its point better that way.

Though the picture is only sporadically powerful and shows a streak of sentimentality beneath its gritty exterior, its strengths outweigh the weaknesses.
