Cette superproduction espagnole retrace les aventures d'un mercenaire dans l'Espagne de la premiere moitie du XVIIe siecle. Luxueusement presente, s'attardant tout autant sur les batailles menes par l'Espagne lors de la guerre de 80 ans, les tribulations sentimentales du heros incarne par Viggo Mortensen, les complots de la Cour des Habsbourg ou la puissance de l'inquisition, ce film de cape et d'epee n'a pas a rougir de la comparaison avec les blockbusters americains heroico-historiques du meme calibre : il possede sans doute moins de puissance emotionnelle et d'emphase dans la mise en scene mais certainement plus de credibilite historique et de profondeur. Neanmoins, il est dommage que la totalite - six volumes - du roman d'Arturo Perez-Reverte aient ete condense en deux petites heures, au lieu de s'etre attarde sur l'un des volumes en particulier. On suit des lors le destin du capitaine Alatriste au pas de charge avec l'impression d'assister a une succession d'evenements historiques sans beaucoup de coherence entre eux.

Whouaaah!! Viggo Mortensen speaks spanish!!!... Silly, the movie is beautiful BUT the history is difficult to follow... like a succession of scenes with no relation between the precedent...

Adapted from a series of novels, the story deals with a professional mercenary. When not under contract by the army he works as a hitman in his city of recidence. This gets him into about as much trouble as expected. Because it deals with such a long period in the mans life, the film has to skip through its own story a bit, not completely drawing the viewer in all the time. Might have worked better if they had focussed more on some aspects, and let others out entirely. Alas, the choice was made, and it's not too bad, seeing it all in a single movie where other would spread less than one story out over a trilogy. The portrayal of the period makes up for a lot, with good outfits and authentic fencing. As a Dutchman I also enjoyed the little appearances "we" made. For people that like drama and adventure, or history.

O filme, apesar de nÃ£o ser uma mega-produÃ§Ã£o hollywoodesca, Ã© bastante razoÃ¡vel. NÃ£o estando pejado de efeitos especiais e cenas de acÃ§Ã£o, "a la Pirata das CaraÃbas", tem uma grande vantagem... O realizador e os produtores foram espectaculares, no rigor histÃ³rico. NÃ£o vÃ£o encontrar aqui falhas monumentais, como em Braveheart, em nome do espectÃ¡culo.
