Candleshoe (1977)

When ex-con artist Harry claims that a secret treasure is hidden inside Candleshoe, an English estate, he creates an elaborate plan to find and steal the prize. By convincing a girl named Casey to impersonate the estate owner's long-lost granddaughter, Harry hopes to uncover the treasure's location. But when Casey has a change of heart, she must follow the clues and find the treasure, in order to save Candleshoe and stop Harry before it is too late.

Candleshoe, with its beguiling English countryside settings, languid pace, defanged Dickensian villains, compassionate butler, down-at-the-heels nobility, hidden treasure and orphaned children engaged in a plot to outwit swindlers, keep up appearances and save the old manor from foreclosure, is the fiction of a bygone era.

Excellent film full of mystery, comedy, and touching narrative. Helen Hayes gives a touching and fun performance while Jodie Foster is great as always. David Niven steals the show though as the butler who is also the rest of the staff and neighbors. Quite enjoyable and intriquing with clues leading to treasure; car pursuits after a train; and an epic climatic battle with every weapon imaginable within Candleshoe.

This film was very well written and properly cast. However, I wouldn't recommend it for small children.
