Camp 14: Total Control Zone (2012)

Shin Dong-Huyk was born on November 19, 1983 as a political prisoner in a North Korean re-education camp. He was a child of two prisoners who had been married by order of the wardens. He spent his entire childhood and youth in Camp 14, in fact a death camp. He was forced to labor since he was six years old and suffered from hunger, beatings and torture, always at the mercy of the wardens. He knew nothing about the world outside the barbed-wire fences. At the age of 23, with the help of an older prisoner, he managed to escape. For months he traveled through North Korea and China and finally to South Korea, where he encountered a world completely strange to him.

As difficult as it is to view all the accounts and footage used in Camp 14, it makes for truly sobering viewing that cuts to the quick.

Anton Bitel 03 Oct 2013

It is this very understatement, and the weight given to Shin's words over any accompanying sound or image, that prevent Wiese's film ever seeming exploitative, even though it is addressing unimaginable human depravity and degradation.

David Gritten 02 Oct 2013

Director Wiese, proceeding at a cautious pace, gleans one horrific fact of life in Camp 14 after another.

Sophie Monks Kaufman 02 Oct 2013

This harrowing and vital documentary examines life in a North Korean death camp.

James O 31 Dec 2014

Another top documentary. Its shocking to hear what goes on in these camps but at the same time not that shocking which is quite shocking if you get what I mean. The real surprise is at the end of the film when it reveals the power of being institutionalised. All very sad.
