Cabin in the Sky (1943)

When compulsive gambler Little Joe Jackson dies in a drunken fight, he awakens in purgatory, where he learns that he will be sent back to Earth for six months to prove that he deserves to be in heaven. He awakens, remembering nothing and struggles to do right by his devout wife, Petunia, while an angel known as the General and the devil's son, Lucifer Jr., fight for his soul.

...a suspect morality tale, yet once the performers grab ahold of the music, all that falls by the wayside.

an important, landmark film and shoudl be viewed in its own historical context for being one of the first to feature all black cast. i felt the film was a bit sappy, as most minelli films are but the dance sequences were great!

One of the best all African American musicals ever made with an all star cast... the vocals are magnificent, the plot a little lacking (1943) but is a memorable must see for African American history sake..l

Almost every song is a showstopper in Vincente Minnelli's adaptation of the Broadway musical; Ethel Waters sings the title song, "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe" and the Oscar-nominated "Takin' a Chance on Love," Lena Horne does "Honey in the Honeycomb" (reprised by Waters), and even Eddie "Rochester" Anderson gets to sing "Life's Full of Consequences" - a duet with Horne. Highly enjoyable.
