Bugs (2016)

Although scientists and agribusiness have started touting edible insects as the future of sustainable food, the notion of eating bugs hasn't exactly gained much popularity among the general public. Head Chef Ben Reade and Lead Researcher Josh Evans from the Nordic Food Lab in Denmark are looking to change that. With a focus on food diversity and deliciousness, they set out on a globe-trotting mission to take on the politics of the palate, sampling grubs in the Australian outback, pillaging giant wasp nests in Japan and attending food expos where entrepreneurs pitch their flavorless farmed crickets. Along the way, they put their own haute cuisine spin on local insect delicacies, whipping up dishes like cricket and grasshopper ravioli, maggot cheese gelato and bee larva ceviche.

[Bugs] lacks cohesion in its philosophy as well as its intent. Its biggest failure, however, is its inability to convince its audience that bugs could turn out to be a nice, light snack.

Grubs as grub isn't a new idea, but Andreas Johnsen's documentary Bugs looks at the subject in a lively and thoughtful way.

Alan Scherstuhl 27 Sep 2017

It's gently comic, a touch naïve, and somewhat moving: These idealists are ready to fight to keep creepy-crawlies farm to table.

Gary Goldstein 11 Oct 2017

If a diet that includes maggots, locusts, termites and buffalo worms doesn't entirely repel you, then the documentary "Bugs" might prove an intriguing look at the potential future of protein-rich nutrition sources for an expanding world.

Susan G. Cole 12 Jan 2017

Sounds like a good idea: convince the planet's ever-expanding population that insects are a sustainable food source, figure out ways to make them tasty and then change the world. That's what this doc's engaging subjects... set out to do.
