A plot of which a soap opera would be proud (can so much drama really befall three adjacent households simultaneously?!) but Broken is so brilliantly acted and beautifully shot that it gets away with it. The subtlety of the kids' performances tips the film's balance from melodrama back into something beautiful and moving.

There are simply too many characters jostling for attention and too many competing plot strands in a not-quite-seamless marriage of hard-edged social realism with a lyrical novelistic overlay. That said, the film is rich in poignant moments and negotiates its frequent shifts from violence to gentleness to sorrow with sensitivity.

"Broken" by Rufus Norris (2013) - Excellent film with truly interesting perspectives on dysfunctional families. Great directing. Tim Roth as we like him. A new talent: Eloise Laurence has Natalie Portman's potential.

BBC makes the best sentimental little movies. Cast was great, plot was good, storytelling was also very good, directing superb. I enjoyed every minute of it. But I'll admit I didn't understand what they were saying %30 of the time.
