Let me see if I've got this straight... Bud Cort is this virgin chauffeur who looks like (Where's) Waldo and lives by himself underneath the Houston Astrodome. He's building a pair of wings so he can fly his way to freedom. A young ladyfriend of his brings him organic food every day or so and masturbates in front of him as he exercises. But Sally Kellerman doesn't want Brewster to have sex with this girl (or anyone) because he'll become too attached to the earth. Sally takes off all her clothes and gives Bud sponge baths. Meanwhile, a cop arrives in Texas to help solve a series of murders where all the victims have been strangled and crapped on by birds. It seems to be making fun of "Dirty Harry", "Bullitt", Disneyland, and makes references to Captain America and "The Wizard of Oz". This is weird even for Altman. I have no idea what any of this means, and the middle is kind of fat, but it's about as original as movies get, and oddly moving at the end.

Brewster McCloud spares practically nothing in contemporary society. Literate original screenplay is a sardonic fairy tale for the times, extremely well cast and directed.

What a crazy movie. A little slow at first but absurdly worth it if your a fan of the surreal social commentary type of thing.

Fernando F. Croce 03 May 1984

What saves the film from curdled, wise-ass whimsy is the control Altman brings to the freewheeling material, to say nothing of the undercurrent of despair that keeps its absurdism bold and beguiling.

The off-kilter humor on display during the first half is terrific, but the film can't maintain its momentum and meanders during the second hour.
