A good premise, but doesn't fulfill its promises

Another great To masterpiece. The opening shootout and finale were two amazing ideas. A standard cop movie told from the perspective of the criminals, another great piece of work!

A 7 minute shootout done in one take opens this crackling crime thriller, and it never lets up after that. It is also able to juggle the story through different perspectives, and balance action with the theme of media being used and manipulated. They even go so far as to develop the villains, so the movie is not so one sided. A fantastic movie with sharp social themes and explosive action.

A rare nice Hong Kong movie. The first 10 minutes 1-shot action scene at the beginning is stunning, but can be better. The concept & story is cool, the new era media & internet war. Kind of unexpected good performance (not the best, should get some really good casting though) from the actors & actresses I don't admire. Good job, Johnny To!

Breaking News impresses with its usual Johnnie To style and technical proficiency, but the acting and plot is a preposterous mess. Kelly Chen's performance is wooden, Nick Cheung is kind of goofy and high-strung, and only Richie Ren gets by looking cool and not doing too much. None of these characters are particularly appealing or interesting; each of them seem to have some kind of backstory that is never really fleshed out. The story itself is strangely paced and often serves up huge lapses in logic. Ostensibly, Breaking News makes some kind of commentary about the power of media, but whatever message it's trying to convey isn't particularly coherent, nor is it presented in subtle or clever ways. Even the gunplay, a highlight of the film, is often confusing in its staging and editing; there are moments where so much is going on that it's not clear which characters are where, and who's shooting at who.
