Breaker Morant (1980)

During the Boer War, three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war. The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom.

There are very few movies that are so good in every way that I can't criticize a single frame. This is one of them, one of the best war films ever made and one of the best movies ever made, period. Great performances, well written, beautifully photographed. I recently had the privilege to see an HD print of it, and all I can say is "wow". If I was king of the world, this movie would immediately be rereleased in 70mm. This is the best movie that no one has ever heard of.

One of my favourites of all time, extremely well acted, complex, and taking on some of the most difficult moral issues involved in armed conflict. A must-see for anyone who likes to think they are holier-than-thou.
