Breaker Morant (1980)

During the Boer War, three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war. The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom.

One of the perennials that do not change with time, or as you grow up, for that matter. Opens too many question not to leave a long-lasting mark on a person. Story of an individual with his emotions and decisions within a system which has a life of its own. Heavy story of power and relevance of a person within the power of the system. Excellent performances, Woodward at his best ever, captures the audience when he speaks and when he does not. Film is much better when you know the story and controversies behind the story and the characters. I wonder who would be able to make such a great film without action or romance today.

This is one of the best courtroom dramas that I have ever seen. It deals with a kangaroo court in which three Australian officers are charged with murder for executing a German missionary and Boers during the Boer War. They followed the policy the British had for Boers during the war, but the British had to find them guilty to prevent war with Germany. The ending is an incredibly shot and powerful.

Powerful drama with plenty of Dutch slaughterin'. Fine acting by Edward Woodward. And for all I'm concerned, that double-crossing missionary got the swift justice of a bullet in the head he deserved, though Morant and Handcock certainly did not. They did their duty against those dirty savages.
