Breaker Morant (1980)

During the Boer War, three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war. The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom.

One of the best movies ever made. Cinematography is wonderful, the acting is magnificent (Bryan Brown in particular, but Edward Woodward and Jack Thompson also shine), and a plot that will keep your mind interested for days to come. Shoot straight you bastards, don't make a mess of it.

Briliant, and it has one of the funniest endings. But seriously, this is well acted thought out drama about a hero soldier of Oz.

A beautiful, haunting, cynical war (but really anti-war) story about the Aussie role in the Boer War in the early 1900s in South Africa. Great, desperate performance by the lead.

A great Australian film...raw, unsentimental, beautifully shot and as brilliantly acted. Englishman Woodward is ironically tragic as the "Breaker", and a very young Jack Thompson really makes his presence felt. Pity Australian film making has veered away from this kind of gritty realism toward an obssession with "quirky characters" and unconvincing escapism.
