I love Christopher Walken, so I fully expected to love this film as well. The premise is a group of doctors/scientists make a breakthrough discovery and can record thoughts/memories which can then be experienced by other people, complete with smells/tastes/respiratory changes etc. The idea is good and the acting was well done but the movie just seemed to go all over the place and often I was bored. Other times, I found myself just looking for continuity problems - a sign that I was not fully engaged in what was going on. Overall, I don't regret spending my time to watch it but I certainly don't want to see it again.

Really enjoyed this. A little uneven in parts, with slapstick making an appearance between probing questions into life, death and beyond, but Walken's most balanced performance ever shines through. Love the storage medium for complete human memories as well!

This is a film you either get, or it flies by you. Luckily for me, I got it when I first saw it as a child. One of my total guilty pleasures, this film influenced allot of my work. BRAINSTORM is true science fiction. It asks, if we invent something, how do we deal with it? In this case, its the ability to record human experience, and play it back. A total step in a new frontier. This film follows the team who are able to get the process working, and plays through a number of situations. Solid, well thought out, and for a film made in the 80's it didn't shy away from what could have happened. Trumbull wanted to have the film shot in SHOWSCAN, which would have made an even bigger impact when audiences were to have experienced playback. This film is in my top five. James Cameron used it as a bases for writing STRANGE DAYS.
