Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood... Scientists try to harness the old "noodle" itself, using colorful laser-disk-tape and noggin'-reading headgear. Ending is a bit soft, but with this premise, what would you write for it instead?

Fantastic 1970's sci-fi, about a memory recording and playback device and some possible implications...

Visual effects wiz Douglas Trumbull's Brainstorm is a very interesting sci-fi movie. Christopher Walken and Louise Fletcher star as two scientific researchers developing a system able to record and playback people memories. When one of them starts using it for his own agenda, to reconcile with his estranged wife (the late Natalie Wood) everything goes out of control. Shot in three different aspect ratios, Brainstorm is a good sci-fi flick, whose plot starts to crumble when events in the movie are subject to the same fate. The acting is generally good, as it's Douglas Trumbull's directing. It could have been better.

The images from this movie have stayed with me all these years. The metaphor of the sci-fi "thingie" to get inside someone else's head, images, and emotional life is kind of a romantic's dream given flesh. That this is a double edged sword is assured. I'd like to see it updated and redone, but who would play the Natalie Wood role? Or the Chris Walken? It would require actors who could credibly play scientists. Most of the youngsters topping the bill these days look more like underwear models.

This is a film you either get, or it flies by you. Luckily for me, I got it when I first saw it as a child. One of my total guilty pleasures, this film influenced allot of my work. BRAINSTORM is true science fiction. It asks, if we invent something, how do we deal with it? In this case, its the ability to record human experience, and play it back. A total step in a new frontier. This film follows the team who are able to get the process working, and plays through a number of situations. Solid, well thought out, and for a film made in the 80's it didn't shy away from what could have happened. Trumbull wanted to have the film shot in SHOWSCAN, which would have made an even bigger impact when audiences were to have experienced playback. This film is in my top five. James Cameron used it as a bases for writing STRANGE DAYS.
