It’s a rare achievement contained within an even rarer type of film: a Black-led, British romantic comedy. But there are, unfortunately, limits to how new and invigorating Boxing Day actually feels.

A few storytelling decisions don’t ring true, but the winning performances and loving celebration of Black British culture help conjure up just enough holiday cheer to make this worth watching.

Boxing day It has a nice and upbeat styling with a beautiful sprinkle of culture (black, British and American). The plot is stuffed and convoluted, this may help keep its pacing going steadily, but a deep look can reveal how thin the main plot is, and needing of more conflict. The characterization and cast is what elevates the movie; the perky and good-humoured performance the cast delivers is strong to carry the movie. If I'm to judge from the original songs Leigh Anne Pinnock delivered, I'm really not excited for her solo era as a musician.

Ameen has perfectly plausibly brought off a high-gloss mainstream picture with a big heart and a very nice supporting cast, including Stephen Dillane as Shirley’s new boyfriend. For Ameen, it’s another step on the way to Hollywood stardom.
