Borstal Boy (2001)

Brendan Behan, a sixteen year-old IRA foot soldier, is going on a bombing mission from Ireland to Liverpool during the second world war. His mission is thwarted when he is apprehended, charged and imprisoned in Borstal, a reform institution for young offenders in East Anglia, England.

decent story and good to see Dyer in such a different role to his usual "awight bruv" castings.

One small error in the plot on here. Behan does not befriend a gay student but a gay sailor brilliantly played by Danny Dyer. I was surprised that this was based on Behan's own book about the Borstal expeerience. Haven't read it, so I am not sure if they have left things out in the film. Of course Borstal was a reform institution, but it didn't really come across as such a bad place to be.

A wonderful film that i had to go out and buy as soon as i watched it for the first time. Though compared to be the Irish brokeback, i don't believe that gives it nearly the credit it deserves. The context of being in a boys prison, WW2, and Oscar Wilde show a greater depth to both charactors and the plot. Have a box of tissues for this film, it will be needed. Just a wonderful film!

Behan himself knew how to spin a tale and one can't help but think he'd appreciate this attempt to turn his life into art.
