Bloody Mama (1970)

Sexually abused as a young girl, Kate "Ma" Barker grows into a violent and powerful woman by the 1930s. She lovingly dominates her grown sons and grooms them into a pack of tough crooks. The boys include the cruel Herman, who still shares a bed with Ma; Fred, an ex-con who fell in love with a fellow prisoner; and Lloyd, who gets high on whatever's handy. Together they form a deadly, bizarre family of Depression-era bandits.

This is one of Roger Corman's depression era crime movies. Of course it's cashing in on "Bonnie & Clyde"'s success. The funniest thing is Robert De Niro in an early role, trying to do a Southern accent. The movie is actually pretty edgy. More than a lot of things are today. Another Roger Corman produced movie to look into would be Boxcar Bertha. It's another depression era crime biopic. He had Martin Scorsese direct it.

Although not gripping like Bonny and Clyde, I was a bit surprised by the film's raw energy and decent performances including from Shelley Winters. However, it was the film's climax that brings everything above and beyond and leaves one cruel ending.

The beginning is good hillbilly fun, the end shootout is awesome, but the middle is all over the place and sluggish.
