Blood Into Wine (2010)

Music fans know Maynard James Keenan as the frontman of such bands as Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, but in this documentary filmmakers Christopher Pomerenke and Ryan Page offer a closer look at one of the prolific rocker's more unexpected hobbies -- winemaking. Along with his business partner Eric Glomski, Keenan has managed to transform an arid stretch of Arizona desert into a lush vineyard that yields some particularly tasty grapes. Through unguarded conversations with Keenan and Glomski, Pomerenke and Page discover just what got the pair interested in winemaking, and why they chose such a hostile natural environment to serve as the site of their winery.

I'm not a wine drinker so I wasn't fully into this movie. Whereas I am very interested in Maynard Keenan, this documentary didn't grab me.

Interesting & surprisingly original documentary about two things really: (1) the evolution of a proven rock star's (Maynard James Keenan) desire to create something out of nothing (a vineyard in the Arizona desert)...and see it flourish & (2) the actual pain-staking process of developing a thriving winery (with partner Eric Glomski)...from the selection of soil to the final stages of actually bottling their unique creations and getting them to wine sellers across the nation. Tool fans should find this film more than a little bit fascinating. Wine enthusiasts should be able to appreciate many aspects of this doc. Others will find it educational...and pretty damn funny at times...to say the least. Worth a rent for most when it comes out on DVD in September.

Your enjoyment level of this documentary may depend on both your interest in vino and Maynard James Keenan (Lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier). As an avid follower of both topics, I have eagerly sought out this enaging and edifying examination of the numerous dimensions of this often elusive artist and his passion for wine. The documentary infuses humour and some tongue in cheek silliness into what is usually considered a serious and sacred topic, though it never disrespects the subject matter. I felt this to be a rich and rewarding experience that would only be bettered by tasting a bottle of Northern Arizona's fine Cabernet.

Legendary Maynard James Keenan's interest in wine unfolded into his involvement in Jerome, Arizona and his envolving wine brand. The documentary itself is quite avarage, nothing bone-shattering. Maynard is a interesting personality and makes this piece interesting.

Very interesting and informative. It's a treat to see what Maynard is like outside of his bands and how he has managed to get to where he is today in the wine industry. This is mostly for fans, but I got my mom to sit through it and enjoy it too.
