All of Europe was affected by the Great Depression of the 1930s, but some parts were hurt less badly than others. France, for instance, was relatively prosperous. In this grim drama, a sturdy Polish boxer and his family have settled into a mining town in northern France because that's where the work is. Like European "guest workers" in the 1990s, the Polish immigrants then were frequently treated badly by the locals. In this drama, the romantic aspirations of the boxer's son are thwarted by the concerted efforts of the local men and his own family's preference that he marry another Polish girl. After his romance fails, the son becomes a union activist and sacrifices a great deal to try to gain higher wages for the miners, but the contract he works out is reneged on by the duplicitous owners.

Fairly amusing romance May-December romance, played with considerable charm by Paul Newman and Lolita Davidovich.

Hey... this we've bought this movie in every format it's been released in... and we've shown it to parents and all sorts of folks when 'there's nothing else on'.... everyone enjoys it. Not Oscar worthy, but a very good, watchable movie. Worthy of a look.

This is one of the greatest love stories I have seen on film. It is an underrated Gem. I personally it should be re released to theatres promoted as a new film, and people will come because Paul newmans in it! It will have better coverage, and a better D.V.D made. Earl K. Long was a brave man, being a progressive govenor in the south at that time. He he seems to be a genius using rascism of other people to advance african americans role in society. I love this film!

a wonderfully acted piece of roamnceand political satire based on the lengendary govenor long and his girl the stripper named blaze starr. While the second half of the film begins to wander into hokum, the performances from paul newman and lolita davidovich help evelate this film from being another movie of the week. worth watching iof your looking for something different or to see anbother great performance from legendary paul newman
