This is one of my favorite movies. I was five year-old the first time I watched it and have been hooked since. Just imagine Dracula with SOUL!

When I saw "Blacula" for the first time, I was a kid and all I did was make fun of it with my friends. As an adult, I now have a new appreciation for this film. While not nearly as creative as "Sugar Hill" or as exciting as "Coffy", "Blacula" shares that same surprising quality of transcending the cheapness in the end to find the viewer genuinely gripped by the story. This is a really sad and tragic movie, and the final scene is actually heartbreaking. I'm glad I decided to give it a second viewing.

Its better than it should be, given the title. A subgenre of blaksplotation films made horror movies with black actors. William Marshall, a respected stage actor, took the role of the dead African Prince Mamuwalde, who is turned into a vampire by Count Dracula and cursed to be Dracula's black counterpart, Blacula. Sheesh. But the film is better than it should be and provides a few frights. Canuck actor Gordon Pincent is cast as an LA cop; he soon returned to Canada to act on stage and in CBC miniseries.

William Marshall gives a devoted performance in this blaxploitation vampire flick, and it pays off for the most part. Dragging in certain areas, Blacula is never the less a fun vampire movie with a little funk and soul.
