Burton was never better. A largely peaceful war movie. In this age of drone warfare, Leith'd disdain for Brand's fear of close combat is especially relevant. (But Leith in shooting the German prisoner broke the rules, he admits.) Jurgens as ever gives a wonderful performance.

Set in Libya during WWII, this is a somewhat starchy tale of the rivalry between two soldiers sent on a dangerous mission to obtain some vital documents. Curd Jürgens plays the Major in charge of the mission with Richard Burton as the Captain who is having an affair with his wife. The two leads are excellent and there is a genuine sense of tension and loathing between the two men but the story is rather plodding and despite some fine direction, I'm afraid this movie didn't pack enough of a punch to be any more than average.

This was a decently done movie. The plot was very interesting in the way it portrayed the story of the two men as well as the mission of a team of men. There were some definite flukes in the movie, such as Germans carrying Thompson's but altogether an enjoyable WWII movie.

[C+/65] Wartime melodrama interesting mainly for the performances and moral interplay between the lead actors, Burton and Jürgens. The stark black-and-white photography lends itself well to expressing a dialogue of principles, personal war, and futility on a battlefield between a wry captain and his rather fraudulent major. Burton and Jürgens are excellent, even with underdeveloped (or, at best, muted) backstories that hamper a fuller exploration and explanation of their characters. Alas, much of the plot seems arid and overlooked, while military aspects, from the shabby comportment of the soldiers to the lackadaisical commando raid and tactics, seem unbelievable. Though, to be fair, this is far less a movie about war exploits than about simple, bitter human failings.
