A ravishing example of the incandescent grandeur of Swanson and Valentino.

Great restoration and great story behind the print. One only wishes more classic films once though to be lost forever were found again. In particular, I'd like the full cut of Cleopatra and every one of Orson Welles' cuts. Both Valentino and Swanson are wonderful, although neither gives their best performance. I always wonder how this type of acting would work today and what today's acting would look like in a silent film. This is photographed beautifully, but the narrative is a bit lacking, which prevents it from being a truly great film. Excellent final scene and dialogue though.

The plot is as old as the hills and the melodrama is more risible than affecting. Also, the movie is slow going in the middle parts, though it picks up nicely in the last half hour with an amusing letter switcharoo and an eventful trip to the Sahara. None of this is to say this is a bad film, it's just kind of mediocre and of interest primarily on account of the Swanson/Valentino pairing (although there doesn't really seem to be much "chemistry" between the two.)

Valentino and Swanson display the confident way with expression and gesture that silent stars had to develop to project their intentions in the absence of audio, but little about the film is especially over the top.

A lost film in the annuls of history, Beyond the Rocks was found, restored, and subtitled for the enjoyment of the masses. Sadly, my enjoyment was quelmed by the lackluster equivalent to my wildest fantasies. I do give creedence in every aspect that I can: the loss of sound, the loss in quality over the last 90 years, the overacting, the extravagant costuming, and the difference in movies today. I can forgive all of these things, look past them, and survey the quality of the actual film. Those things said, it was bad. It was gruesome. Written by shockster Elinor Glyn and directed by De Mille protege Sam Wood, the plot was shamelessly boring. I do give kudos to the angle of her deep devotion to her rich, ugly husband though she was in love with the aristocratic Valentino, who she shared magically dramatic chemistry with. Still, Swanson's future work is filled with much more intelligent films.
