Mungiu is not preaching - he is telling us what can happen when people are trapped within their own emotions and circumstances. Remarkable.

"Beyond the HIlls" is about faith against reason, love against love, sanity against craziness, bleak against bleaker, and most importantly: a bore! Painfully slow, so difficult for me to finish it, and when I did I cannot say it was worth it. I did like "Graduation", that Cristian Mungiu wrote, but as a director I really cannot stand him. "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" had the same effect on me, and I will think twice before watching his next work.

5+/5 Indescribably dark and chilling, a tale of what can happen when religion goes wrong (people do wrong), that even with the best intentions, no God did not give you permission/excuse to do anything...and it is all on you! Bleak gorgeous cinematography pulls you in like it's happening right there, core-wrenching characters and disturbing moments of (dis)belief but as one who grew up in the church, story hit home and so true. Superb acting, story is raw and tight (based on a true story)...Shows you that sacrificing yourself for another and hoping for change is like a death. Fav!
