A slow and somnolent film depicting the systemic failure to help the sick and vulnerable in Romania who are caught between strained public services and outdated practices. Overly long and repetitive, by the end of the film you may feel like you've emerging from prolonged isolation yourself.

An engrossing psychological drama about what happens in a monastery when the zealousness of faith leads to suffering and separation rather than healing and wholeness.

It delivers an emotional punch, in what its director has called a story about the sin of indifference.

To start with the main positive is that the film has fantastic cinematography and the camera angles are intelligent. One of the main issues is that you don't care about any of the characters. The main girl who you are supposed to feel sorry for, you actually find incredibly annoying, the key relationship completely lacks chemistry, and the film plods along at a startlingly slow pace dragging out over 2 and a half hours! Some of the nuns are simply wailing caricatures. Overall it misses tackling some powerful issues with any real bite. It fails to build enough tension or suspense to make it worth going to see.

The filmmaker’s dedication to non-judgment occasionally militates against narrative drive: Beyond the Hills begins to sag in its middle sequences, when the repetitive monotony of Alina’s outbursts begins to yield diminishing returns. But he has made a film that’s worth even those wearying sequence.
