An odd installment in Tourneur's filmography but a very entertaining international espionage thriller. The odd Rod Sterling-esque voice over somehow works with the post war Europe setting, achieving a satisfying dissonance. This dissonance is found also in the motley crew of protagonists including a clown (?). Very entertaining stuff, and an interesting take on the noir format but be sure to check out Tourneur's psychological-horrors and true noirs!

I have not seen too many 1948 movies. Most interesting thing about this movie is that it seems they used actual footage of bombed out Frankfurt and Berlin as backdrops to the movie. The movie is quite idealistic - five people from five different countries try to rescue a German peacemaker just after WWII.

Exciting thriller set in post World War 2 Germany that is somewhat diminished by the annoyingly invasive narrative.

I found those old post-war pictures of Frankfurt and Berlin extremely interesting, having spent many years in both places as they grew out of the rubble into modern cities. The shots of the Pater Nosters in the Frankfurt IGB Farben building brought back delightful and sometimes apprehensive moments.

A totally complex political intrigue story about a group of train travellers travelling through post war Eastern Europe (!!) get more then they bargained for when one of the travellers winds up murdered. He turns out to be a German ex-patriot working for a better Germany. But wait! He's actually living! That was a rogue! Soon, the travellers are hauled off the train to the US occupiied zone in Hamburg where they are grilled about this assassination. The group (led by Robert Ryan, who knows about these noirish things) find out there's more to this story then meets the eye, and do some investigasting of their own.. Yes, in post-war Germany. Rather interesting to use this as a background, and it is fun to listen to Ryan spurt out a travelogue on Bombed out Germany film-noir style (maybe worth the film alone) but the film gets AWFULLY murky, with character after character thrown in, leaving a multitude of subplots in it's wake. Maybe not all worth it...
