Maddeningly uneven documentary, at turns poignant, insightful and dull. Its main strength in the quality of comment from Darling's associates about her persona as a work of art, its similarities to and differences from the life of other trans women of her generation. Its main weakness is that it assumes everyone watching will already be a huge fan of the subject, completely failing to establish her importance and only even attempting to touch on it about 50 minutes into the film. At times it is almost arrogantly esoteric--even Darling's famous good-bye letter is offered as an afterthought, an Easter egg hidden well into the end credits.

A poignant look at Candy Darling (one of my favourite personalities from the Warhol/Morrisey films) - Darling was audacious and tragic, manipulative and dazzlingly charismatic. The filmmaker uses drawings, photos and sketches to great effect, to bring out the high and low points of Darling's too short life. This is also a compelling portrait of a fascinating era full of prodigious creative output.

A transgender icon with a life as tragically short as some of the idols she worshipped, she's the deserving subject of an archivally rich remembrance, and such is James Rasin's poignant documentary Beautiful Darling.

The most lasting aspect of the film for me is the enduring devotion of Candy's best friend, Jeremiah Newton. These many years later, he is still looking after her. Though the love story here many not be a conventional one, these are not conventional people. I've seen this three times, and it gets even better with each viewing. The soundtrack is perfect. Not too obtrusive, but always appropriate.
