he film ranges from the diffident to the grotesque, with Huston selecting his lenses to make the performers look as freakish as possible.

Dark humor at its best with stellar performances by Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. Script by Truman Capote is at times too serious for this farce but, for the most part, keeps things lively.

Funny film, very understated, but sadly very poorly put on DVD. The picture is in pan & scan, and is blotchy and blurry, although apparently it looked pretty cheap when it was made too, so I guess that doesn't help. This film was a flop when it came out, and Bogart hated it, but considering he paid for it, then that's probably why. Also, I don't think he quite got the picture, which was ahead of it's time. I thought the affair between Bogart and Jones was quite surprisingly played, considering the censors.

It's hard to understand where the comedy is, actually the movie isn't very good because of the story but the performances and John Huston's direction were fine. Humphrey Bogart played Bogart again and he was charming as ever, Jennifer Jones played a great liar and Lollo was really sexy and beautiful.

Heard this wasn't that good and for once they were right, honestly when John Houston and Bogart do a movie its usually good. I found it funny to see Peter Lorre from a young creepy guy int he Maltese Falcon to a plump old man, but his voice and demenor is still the same. The movie plays like a 50s indie film that is as dry as the setting of the film I gather, very boring and very disappointing, if this movie was to lampoon caper movies like the one they did The Maltese Falcon, they failed miserably.
