Battle in Seattle (2007)

Thousands of activists arrive in Seattle, Washington in masses to protest the WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999 (World Trade Organization). All I can say is I wish I'd been there.

Although the fictionalised characters and personal plotlines aren't always completely convincing, the acting was strong and lent a sufficient amount of verite...in the end, though, the film is really carried along by the agonising and exhilarating force of the protest itself. It made me want to man the barricades. But incredibly, yet. AGAIN. This was yet another movie in which Charlize Theron came and went without me realising who the hell she was. The woman is a chameleon! I felt sorry for the guy who played the mayor's assistant--his entire role consisted of opening a door, entering, delivering bad news with a rueful expression, and then exiting.

Absolutely amazing cast! Really great story too.

A gritty and brutal, but somehow still hopeful film about the WTO convention in Seattle and the protest-turned-riot that ensued. It felt much like United 93 in its docu-drama "tell it like it was" style, mixed with Crash's "you're all connected"-ness and a little of An Inconvenient Truth's activist streak thrown in for good measure. Features strong performances from everyone, including surprising turns from "Torque" star Martin Henderson and god-damned Andre 3000... Ultimately, it suffers a bit from it's message-y overtones, but it's a message I tend to agree with, and it's well presented.

Fucking good. And fucking sad that, 11 years on, the world is still in the shit. Excellent performances and tight direction make this compelling viewing.
