Battle Hymn (1957)

Dean Hess, who entered the ministry to atone for bombing a German orphanage, decides he's a failure at preaching. Rejoined to train pilots early in the Korean War, he finds Korean orphans raiding the airbase garbage. With a pretty Korean teacher, he sets up an orphanage for them and others.

...doesn't miss a single cliché as it makes a calculated circuit of the old militant sky-pilot plot.

At best it's a serviceable war drama, that if it were not in Sirk's capable hands would have probably suffered an even more disastrous fate.

Unbedingt ein Nebenwerk von Douglas Sirk, und gemeinsam mit dem im gleichen Jahr inszenierten INTERLUDE der schwÃ¤chste Film aus der Ã 1/4beraus kreativen Karrierephase der 50er Jahre. Immerhin weiÃ man nach diesem dank groÃartiger visueller Gestaltung immerhin wunderschÃ¶n anzuschauenden Film nun endlich, dass die USA am Koreakrieg vor allem teilgenommen haben, um Kinder zu retten und WaisenhÃ¤user zu bauen. BATTLE HYMN ist leider ein schamlos schmalziger Propagandastreifen mit allerlei wohlfeilen Bibel- und PoesiealbumsprÃ 1/4chen und hat zu den abgrÃ 1/4ndigen artifiziellen Melodramen, die Sirk zu einem der bedeutendsten Regisseure seiner Zeit machen, rein gar nichts hinzuzufÃ 1/4gen.

Douglas Sirk's sentimental Korean War tale of guilt and redemption is a weak, uncharacteristic film of the famed director, but it's worth seeing as a panel in his many collaborations with star Rock Hudson.
