Bataan (1943)

During Japan's invasion of the Philippines in 1942, Capt. Henry Lassiter, Sgt. Bill Dane and a diverse group of American soldiers are ordered to destroy and hold a strategic bridge in order to delay the Japanese forces and allow Gen. MacArthur time to secure Bataan. When the Japanese soldiers begin to rebuild the bridge and advance, the group struggles with not only hunger, sickness and gunfire, but also the knowledge that there is likely no relief on the way.

World War II, The Philippines: As Japanese forces advance a veteran Sgt volunteers to lead 13 men in a desperate rear guard action to slow the Japanese advance, but is this a battle any of them will walk away from? Made in 1943 at the height of the Second World War Bataan was intended as a morale booster and a salute to the Allied Forces fighting in the Pacific. Check it out. Interesting side note, the NAACP gave this film several awards for its portrail of a black soldier.

Quite a gripping little war picture here, a remake of the well-intentioned but ultimately very boring "The Lost Patrol", Here, Robert Taylor leads the pack of mixed-bag soldiers to a helpless case, keeping a bridge destroyed while Jap snipers are picking them off, one by one. This one is quite gritty, lots of startling violence and characters to keep this one humming along. I really liked it.

A real gung ho World War II propaganda film. I can be a bit much at times, but considering the year it was made it's understandable. It's a fine film, good cast.

Since it was basically a tale of defeat, the nervous producers emphasized heroism, but later, under criticism of fabricating the facts with mechanically packed incidents, MGM was forced to acknowledge "some melodramatic flaws and technical mistakes."
