Though many of its images and much of its formal play have been well incorporated into the language of experimental cinema, giving this a certain air of familiarity, this still remains a beautiful and captivating short.

Leger's film establishes equivalences between humans and machinery with a series of highly rhythmic cuts (over 300 shots in under 15 minutes) that deprive inanimate objects of their symbolic meaning. Great Antheil score, but watch it silent anyway.

A rather terrifying experience, all in all. I have to say it was slightly too long, but I did - for the most part - enjoy it. I may now run away from whisks in future.

If you mute it and play instrumental music you like, it's actually a lot more interesting. I used rhapsody in blue and it synced up a few places. But with the original soundtrack, it's dreadful. Like framing a sketch with live eels and calling it a masterpiece.
