This movie is fantastic. It sees a man truly and for the first time grasping at living his own life, and it is a better life (ditching the lame socialite fiancee, standing up for himself at work). This transformation is facilitated largely by his new alpha-male take-no-prisoners 'life coach' (Rob Lowe). Like many movies that promote true male empowerment (Fight Club, Falling Down) the last resort to true progress is employed, meaning that the man promoting the growth has to be eventually be portrayed as crazy, which usually has the lame effect of perhaps casting doubts on all the assessments and progress made thus far.

Rob Lowe is perfect as the seductive, diabolical antagonist. A fun movie that holds up.

As Lowe systematically dismantles Spader's antiseptic existence, Hanson and writer David Koepp handle the thriller plot well, with Lowe effective as the plastically beautiful but deeply dangerous bad influence of the title.
